Short personal essays about education
So now we have the marriage of short writing tips and short personal essays. How many times do writing books offer tips, but no clear example of how they can be put into action? This is the answer to that problem.
When Helen Wan started writing a book more than a decade ago, she thought it would be a collection of short personal essays about her experiences in the work force as someone who occupied not just one category of "outsider" status, but two: woman and minority.
Through the Teacher of Tomorrow Program, I was introduced to the Kernel Books, a series of small books containing short personal essays by blind people. I took a couple of Kernel Books home from Baltimore and read them carefully. I was intrigued by the stories these authors wrote about their lives and the lessons they offered.Since early man carved bison and spears on cave walls, humankind has been telling stories. This anthology brings the vibrant oral tradition to the page through the work of 2nd Story, a Chicago-based collective of story-makers and story-lovers working to build community through storytelling. We culled through ten years of archived performances to select the twenty-three essays presented in this collection. Each was adapted from the stage to the page.Players (18 and older) explored the building’s 70 miles of stacks, and, using laptops and smartphones, following clues to such treasures as the Library’s copy of the Declaration of Independence in Thomas Jefferson’s hand. After finding each object, each of the 500 players wrote short personal essays inspired by their quest — for example, how would they write the Declaration? Winning the game meant writing a collaborative book based on these personal stories about the future, and this volume will be added to the Library’s collections.The University of Colorado Boulder requires applicants to submit two short personal essays.
